Faculty rank is a fixed list of values that Chalk uses for faculty rank. The allowed values are ADJUNCT, INSTRUCTOR, ASSISTANT_PROFESSOR, ASSOCIATE_PROFESSOR, PROFESSOR, EMERITUS. A record can only ever hold one of these exact values, which keeps faculty rank consistent across curriculum, assessment, faculty, scheduling, accreditation, and budget records, as well as the API. When you see one of these on a record, it is one of the defined faculty rank states rather than free text, so reports and automations can rely on it.
