Pdtype is a fixed list of values that Chalk uses for pdtype. The allowed values are WORKSHOP, CERTIFICATION, CONFERENCE, SABBATICAL, COURSE, SEMINAR, FELLOWSHIP, OTHER_PD. A record can only ever hold one of these exact values, which keeps pdtype consistent across curriculum, assessment, faculty, scheduling, accreditation, and budget records, as well as the API. When you see one of these on a record, it is one of the defined pdtype states rather than free text, so reports and automations can rely on it.
