Plan status is a fixed list of values that Chalk uses for plan status. The allowed values are PLANNING, ACTIVE, COMPLETED, ARCHIVED. A record can only ever hold one of these exact values, which keeps plan status consistent across curriculum, assessment, faculty, scheduling, accreditation, and budget records, as well as the API. When you see one of these on a record, it is one of the defined plan status states rather than free text, so reports and automations can rely on it.
