Service type is a fixed list of values that Chalk uses for service type. The allowed values are COMMITTEE, ADVISING, EDITORIAL_BOARD, REVIEW_PANEL, COMMUNITY_ENGAGEMENT, ADMINISTRATIVE, OTHER. A record can only ever hold one of these exact values, which keeps service type consistent across curriculum, assessment, faculty, scheduling, accreditation, and budget records, as well as the API. When you see one of these on a record, it is one of the defined service type states rather than free text, so reports and automations can rely on it.
