Variable source is a fixed list of values that Chalk uses for variable source. The allowed values are PROGRAM, COURSE, OUTCOME, ASSESSMENT, EVIDENCE, FACULTY, ENROLLMENT, ACCREDITATION, MANUAL. A record can only ever hold one of these exact values, which keeps variable source consistent across curriculum, assessment, faculty, scheduling, accreditation, and budget records, as well as the API. When you see one of these on a record, it is one of the defined variable source states rather than free text, so reports and automations can rely on it.
