The screenLength in WellConstruction tells you how much of the well column is open to the aquifer. A longer screenLength captures a larger vertical slice of the water table, which can be appropriate for thick aquifers or unconfined zones. For targeted contaminant monitoring, a shorter screenLength focused at the right depth interval is preferred. Field staff use screenLength to calculate casing volume and determine how many volumes to purge before sampling the well.
