The utmNorthing of an ExcavationUnit is the northward coordinate in the Universal Transverse Mercator grid. Together with utmEasting it gives the unit a precise, real-world location that can be mapped, shared, and compared across projects and sites. Recording the northing means a unit is not just "N100 E50" on a local grid but a defined point you can find again with a GPS, drop into a GIS layer, or hand to a surveyor. This geographic anchoring is essential for compliance mapping and for situating an excavation within the broader landscape. Like the easting, the field is optional and is filled in when a UTM fix is available for the unit.
