An ExcavationUnit moves through UnitStatus values as digging proceeds. OPEN means the unit has been laid out and started but active excavation has not yet begun in earnest. IN_PROGRESS means the unit is actively being excavated and documented. CLOSED means excavation is finished and the unit has been fully recorded. BACKFILLED means the completed unit has been refilled with soil to restore the ground surface, which is the final state after all recording, photography, and sampling are done.
