The tax ID is captured for 1099 and tax-reporting purposes. You enter the full number once; after that Tally only ever shows a masked form (for example the last few digits), never the whole number on screen.
The full tax ID is never displayed back to you. To confirm it you compare against the masked value or re-enter it.
