It holds a String value and is part of the cohort derived attribute record's data. The sessionId field belongs to the cohort derived attribute it is recorded on, so faculty, staff, and automations read or set sessionId while working with that CohortDerivedAttribute record. Because sessionId is part of the CohortDerivedAttribute record, it stays consistent with the rest of that record's data and is scoped to the tenant that owns the cohort derived attribute.
