The northing field captures where, along the north–south axis, an artifact was found within the site grid. Paired with easting, it pinpoints a find's horizontal position so it can be plotted on a map of the excavation. Together with depthCmbd for vertical position, the two coordinates give an artifact full three-dimensional provenience. The field is optional, used for finds that are individually plotted rather than recorded only at the unit or layer level. It is stored as a decimal for precision.
