The southExtent of a Feature measures the feature's southern edge, working together with northExtent, eastExtent, and westExtent to fix the feature's footprint on the ground. Capturing the southern limit alongside the others means you can later draw the feature accurately on a plan map and calculate its approximate area, even long after the trench has been backfilled. For a feature like a MIDDEN or FLOOR that spreads across the dig, the southern extent may differ substantially from the northern one, and recording both reveals the feature's true asymmetry. The value is optional and is measured against the same unit grid as the other extents.
