The westExtent of a Feature measures the feature's western edge and rounds out the set of northExtent, southExtent, eastExtent, and westExtent. With all four recorded you can reconstruct the feature's plan shape, calculate its approximate area, and place it precisely on a site map relative to the excavation grid. Comparing the west extent to the east extent shows how the feature spreads across the dig — a useful check when a WALL or FLOOR appears to continue beyond the limits of a single unit. The value is optional and, like the other extents, is taken against the unit grid so the measurements remain mutually consistent and mappable.
