Project County

The `county` on a Project records the county in which the archaeological work is located.

The county field captures the political subdivision where a Project's fieldwork happens, and it is a required part of a Project's location record. County is meaningful in archaeology because it is one component of the standard Smithsonian trinomial used to designate sites, and because state and federal review agencies organize cultural resource records by county. Recording it on the Project keeps the broad geographic context attached to every site, unit, and artifact beneath it. It works alongside state and the more precise coordinate fields — latitude, longitude, and the UTM values — to place the project on the map at increasing levels of detail.
