Most archaeological investigations on public or protected land require a permit, and permitNumber is where you record the identifier from that authorization. Keeping it on the Project ties the legal permission to dig directly to the records produced under it, which is essential when you report to the permitting agency or demonstrate that your fieldwork was properly authorized. It is optional, since some projects — such as work on private land that needs no permit — will not have one. The permitNumber is distinct from shpoNumber: the permit number reflects authorization to carry out the work, while the SHPO number tracks the historic preservation review case.
