The culturalAffiliation field captures who is connected to a Site — for example a named Native American tribe, a recognized archaeological culture, or a historic settlement group. Recording it gives essential interpretive context: it shapes how the site is understood, who should be consulted, and how finds are handled, which is particularly important for compliance with cultural heritage law. It is free text, so you can record affiliations at whatever level of specificity your evidence supports, and update it as analysis refines the picture. It works alongside siteType, which classifies the broad period of the site, and dateRange, which describes the span of occupation.
