The culturalMaterials field summarizes what human-made or culturally significant material was present in a layer — for example "sparse lithic debitage", "dense ceramics and bone", or "sterile". This high-level note records the cultural character of a deposit even before individual finds are cataloged as artifacts. It is optional and free text. Together with the layer's interpretation, it helps distinguish culturally rich strata from sterile ones and guides decisions about further excavation, and it complements the matrix-focused inclusions field.
