As you dig down through an excavation unit, you record each distinct layer you encounter. Every StratigraphicLayer carries a sequential layerNumber, a designation label, and the depths it spans through depthTop and depthBottom. You document the soil itself with munsellColor, a soilTexture such as SANDY_LOAM or CLAY, a compactness rating like FRIABLE or COMPACT, and any inclusions. The culturalMaterials and interpretation fields capture what was found in the layer and what it means. Artifacts recovered from a layer link back to it.
